Historical background

PAPAL STATES - NICHOLAS V (Tommaso Parentucelli)

(06/03/1447-24/03/1455)

He was elected pope on March 6, 1447 and consecrated on March 19. With the abdication of Felix V on April 7, 1449, the Schism of Basel came to an end. The unity of the Church is celebrated in 1450 by the great jubilee. In 1452, he crowned Emperor Frederick III (the last to be crowned in Rome). After the fall of Constantinople on May 27, 1453, the pope called in vain for the Christian princes to lead a crusade. He died on March 24, 1455.
