Historical background

EUBOEA - CHALCIS

(4th century BC)

Chalcis seems to have entered the Euboean confederation around 375 BC with Eretria, Histiae and Carystos. In 357 BC, the Euboean league abandoned the Theban alliance to move closer to Athens. After the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC, Chalcis fell under the Macedonian rule of Philip II. The city remains under Macedonian control, when it enters with Eretria into Boeotian koine. In 304, Demetrios, son of Antigone conquers Euboea.
