Historical background

EUBOEA - HISTIAIA

(196-168 BC)

Histiae was located in eastern Euboea. Thanks to its important coinage, we can imagine the economic role that the city held. The coinage is said to have been struck to commemorate the expulsion, with the help of the Athenians, of the pro-Macedonian tyrant, Philistides, in 340 BC. in 267 BC. Its independence was confirmed after 196 BC. Its coinage was widely imitated by the Macedonians and was perhaps used to subsidize the mercenaries of the Greek armies on the eve of the battle of Pydna in 168 BC After the Macedonian defeat, the city lost its importance and minted only bronze.
