Historical background

ODO AND COINAGE IN HIS NAME

(29/2/888-01/01/898 and 10th century)

Eudes (860-898) is the first Robertian king, son of Robert the Strong (+866), marquis of Neustria. Eudes, Count of Paris from 882, heroically defended the city against the Normans during the siege around 885-887. Elected and crowned in 888, he was crowned at Compiègne. From this coronation, a fight that will last ten years opposes him to Charles III the Simple, the posthumous son of Louis II the Stammerer. Charles was crowned in 893. Eudes chose Charles as his successor and died in 898. The struggle would last another century between Carolingians and Robertians before Hugues Capet, Duke of the Franks, became the first Capetian king..
