Historical background

EUGENIUS

(22/08/392-6/09/394)

Valentinian II was assassinated on May 15, 392 at the instigation of Arbogast, the real holder of power in the West. The Western empire remains vacant for three months. Eugene, master of offices, was proclaimed august on August 22, 392 by Arbogast. Professor of rhetoric, he is the antithesis of the barbarian general, the true master of the West. The nomination of Eugene is the occasion of the ultimate pagan reaction in the Roman circles of Urbs. Theodosius refuses to recognize Eugene, finally defeated at the Battle of the Cold River. Eugene is beheaded and Arbogast commits suicide.
