Commentary


Joseph Philip est docteur de la Faculté de Reims en 1762, puis de Paris en 1764. Il exploita après son maître Louis Chomel le privilège de la distribution des médicaments dans les provinces pour le compte du roi ce qui était une lucrative opération. Le revers de ce jeton fait justement allusion à ces charges pharmaceutiques : le médecin Philippe est en train de lire à Alexandre, prêt à boire le breuvage qui lui a été servi, la lettre qui l’accuse injustement d’infidélité au roi.

FACULTÉ DE MÉDECINE DE PARIS

The Faculty of Medicine of Paris is one of the four components of the University of Paris, with the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts and Letters. In 1789, it consisted of one hundred and fifty-two doctors, seven of whom were appointed to teach materia medica, physiology, pathology, pharmacy, childbirth, French surgery and Latin surgery. It was headed by a dean, who was also responsible for forming the University tribunal with the deans of Theology and Law, and the four prosecutors of the Faculty of Arts..
