Historical background

FLANDERS - COUNTY OF FLANDERS - PHILIP THE BOLD

(1384-1404)

Philippe le Hardi (1342-1404) was the fourth son of Jean le Bon and Judith of Luxembourg. He accompanies his father to the battle of Poitiers where he is knighted (father keep to the right, father keep to the left!). In 1369 he married Marguerite de Flandre (1350-1405), the daughter of Louis de Male. His father granted him the Duchy of Burgundy in 1363. On the death of his father-in-law in 1384, he became Count of Flanders and, after the death of his brother, Charles V, he enjoyed great prestige with his nephew, Charles VI. On his death in 1404, his son, Jean sans Peur, succeeded him.
