Historical background

FRANCHE-COMTÉ - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF BESANÇON - ANONYMOUS

(late 12th century - early 13th century)

Charles II the Bald granted the right to mint coins to Bishop Arduic. The workshop was established near the Black Gate (Porta Nigra). Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (1197-1250) confirmed this monetary right on April 26, 1220. The name estévenant came from Saint-Étienne. This type of coin appeared in the 11th century and was struck until the 14th century and widely imitated (Metz, Arles).
