Exemplaire sur un flan ovale, bien centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis complets. Beau portrait de Galère Maximien. Joli revers de style fin avec une usure superficielle. Très belle patine marron foncé lissée

Reverse description : Moneta (la Monnaie) drapée, debout à gauche, tenant une balance de la main droite et une corne d'abondance de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Sacra Moneta Augustorum et Caesarum Nostri”, (Monnaie Sacrée de nos Augustes et de nos Césars).

Commentary


Poids très léger. Rubans de type 2 aux extrémités bouletées. Cet exemplaire appartient bien à la première phase de cette émission avec des portraits fins et Moneta coupant la légende au revers.

Caesar

Galère is of humble origin. Chosen as Caesar on March 1 or May 1, 293, he was subordinate to Diocletian to help him govern the East. Galerius suffered a crushing defeat in 296 against the Sassanids but the following year he defeated Narses. According to Lactantius, he was at the origin of the persecution of Christians in 302-303. During Diocletian's illness, he pushes the latter to abdicate. Diocletian and Maximian leave power on May 1, 305 to Galerius and Constance, who become augusts. The last six years of his life, he watched helplessly as the political regime created by Diocletian: the Tetrarchy crumbled. He died on May 5, 311 after having interrupted the persecution against Christians five days earlier..
