Commentary

Historical background

GALERIUS

(+5/05/311)

Galerius struck by Licinius I

Galerius died in terrible suffering which Lactantius attributes to divine anger in order to make him pay for his role in the great persecution against the Christians. Galley was not regretted. Only Licinius I and Maxentius restored his memory. After the elimination of Maxentius, Licinius, by getting closer to Constantine, broke the last ties which united him to Galerius. Galéria Valéria, the wife of Galerius as well as the wife of Diocletian, driven out by Licinius, found refuge near Maximin II Daia who was on the point of confronting Licinius. Maximin, beaten on April 30 in Tzirallum died in Tarsus during the summer of 313. Shortly after, Galéria Valéria will be liquidated at the instigation of Licinius.
