George I was the great-grandson of Jacques I. He was Elector of Hanover since 1698. On coins, George is by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and elector. He succeeded Anne (1702 -1714), the second daughter of Jacques II.
