Historical background

GREECE - PRINCIPALITY OF ACHAEA - MAHAUT OF HAINAUT

(1316-1318)

Mahaut was the wife of Louis of Burgundy who died in 1316 or 1317. Mahaut turned to Robert of Naples, successor to Charles II. Robert married his brother, Jean de Gravines (1318-1333), to Mahaut, thus giving him the title of Prince of Achaia. From 1318, the coinage of the principality of Achaia is in the name of Jean de Gravines.
