Historical background

Undetermined Aera of Normandy

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

Gold issues from the 3rd century and the beginning of the 2nd century are varied but rather poorly known, with a small number of specimens and few certain provenances. Nevertheless, the circulation area seems concentrated on Normandy, thus bringing together peoples such as the Baïocasses, the Unelles or the Léxoviens. These people probably did not have the same reality in the 3rd century as at the time of the Gallic Wars, when Julius Caesar mentions them! Some do not hesitate to group these coins into "Léxoviens du 3e siècle" (MONETA) while others, more cautious, group them under the name "Groupe de Normandie", dated from the 3rd century and the first half of the 2nd century BC." (New Atlas).
