Obverse description : Buste lauré d’Hadrien à droite drapé sur l’épaule (O*2).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Trajan Hadrien auguste).

Reverse legend : P M TR - P COS II// CONCORD.
Reverse description : Concordia (la Concorde) assise à gauche, tenant une patère de la main droite, le coude gauche appuyée sur son siège dont le pied est formé par une statuette de Spes (l’Espérance) ; petite corne d’abondance sous le siège.
Reverse translation : “Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestate Consul tertium// Concordia”, (Grand pontife, revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne, consul pour la troisième fois// La Concorde).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Grand buste héroïque avec petit pan de paludamentum sur l’épaule accompagné d’une lanière placée sur le buste (balteus). C’est la première fois que nous proposons cette rare variante.

Historical background


HADRIAN

(08/11/117-07/10/138)

Hadrian was born in 76 in Italica. Pupil of Trajan, he married in 100 Sabine, grand-niece of the emperor, and made a career in the staff of the latter, in particular during the Dacian campaign. In 117, he succeeded Trajan, and traveled for twenty years, visiting the entire empire - the only Emperor to have lent himself to this exercise. In 122, Hadrian went to Spain. Childless, he first chose Aélius to succeed him in 136, but the latter died on January 1, 138. Hadrian then adopted Antonin on February 25 and himself chose Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus as Antoninus' heirs. He died on July 10, 138.
