Exemplaire sur un flan large et ovale, bien centré des deux côtés. Portrait d’Hadrien magnifique héroïsé. Revers de style fin bien venu à la frappe avec une usure superficielle sur Jupiter. Magnifique patine verte rehaussant les reliefs, légèrement écaillée en bordure périphérique au droit

Obverse description : Buste lauré d’Hadrien à droite, drapé sur l’épaule gauche (O*2).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Trajan Hadrien auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : PONT MAX TR PO-T COS III/ -|-// S C.
Reverse description : Jupiter nicéphore, assis à gauche, sur un trône, nu jusqu’à la ceinture, tenant une victoriola de la main droite et un long sceptre de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestate Consul tertium”, (Grand pontife revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne consul pour la troisième fois).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3. Grand buste héroïque d’Hadrien avec la poitrine (Buste Ig du classement de J. Lacourt). Grand pan de paludamentum bien visible sur la poitrine. Césure de légende de droit inhabituelle.

Historical background


HADRIAN

(08/11/117-07/10/138)

Hadrian was born in 76 in Italica. Pupil of Trajan, he married in 100 Sabine, grand-niece of the emperor, and made a career in the staff of the latter, in particular during the Dacian campaign. In 117, he succeeded Trajan, and traveled for twenty years, visiting the entire empire - the only Emperor to have lent himself to this exercise. In 122, Hadrian went to Spain. Childless, he first chose Aélius to succeed him in 136, but the latter died on January 1, 138. Hadrian then adopted Antonin on February 25 and himself chose Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus as Antoninus' heirs. He died on July 10, 138.
