Commentary

Historical background

GALLIA - HELVETII/ ARVERNI - Unspecified

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

These early staters are the first gold coins, imitated from the stater of Philip II, circulating in Gaul. If many types are distinguished, mainly from the workshop of the prototype and the style, their map of distribution often makes futile this or that attribution to this or that people modeled on the geography "à la Julius César", contemporary with the Gallic Wars! If the name "proto-Helvetian" is justified for commercial reasons, the Swiss being reputed to be better buyers, these first Celtic imitations have a very vast area of distribution, throughout Western Europe, often without an epicenter. allowing to propose a localization even summary of the workshop....
