Historical background

HUNGARY - FRANCIS RAKOCZY

(1703-1711)

François Rakoczy (1676-1735) was proclaimed prince of the empire in 1697. He conquered part of Hungary from the Turks. In 1703, he rebelled against Leopold I, proclaimed in 1705 the forfeiture of the Habsburgs, allied himself with France and Russia. Defeated in 1708 and abandoned by the Hungarian nobility, he took refuge in France before going to die prisoner in Turkey. The independent coinage lasted from 1703 to 1707. There is an interesting case of a re-engraved date: the 5 on the 3 of 1705.
