Historical background

HUNGARY - KINGDOM OF HUNGARY - MATTHIAS CORVINUS

(1456-1490)

Matthias Corvin (1443-1490) is the son of Jean Hunhady. He successively married the daughter of the King of Bohemia, then that of the King of Naples and finally Anne, daughter of the Count of Foix Gaston II, of whom he had Louis II (1506-1526), King of Bohemia and Hungary killed in battle of Mohacs in 1526 against the Turks. The little raven drawn from the arms of Matthias gave him his nickname of Corvin and appears as such in the exergue of the right of his ducats.
