Historical background

HUNGARY - KINGDOM OF HUNGARY - CHARLES III

(1711-1740)

Charles of Habsburg (1685-1740) was Holy Roman Emperor as Charles VI and King of Hungary as Charles III from 1711 to 1740. He came to the throne when the War of the Spanish Succession, triggered by the death of Charles II and the extinction of the senior Habsburg branch, had lasted for 10 years and had exhausted the nations of Europe. The Treaties of Utrecht and Rastatt reshaped Europe: the Habsburgs lost all ambitions over Spain and its colonial possessions but gained the Kingdom of Naples, the Duchy of Milan, Sardinia and the Southern Netherlands..
