Commentary


Le revers rappelle la situation de Priène placée près de Méandre. C’est la première fois que nous proposons une monnaie de cette cité. Ce type semble très rare. (Avec son étiquette de collection ancienne).

IONIA - PRIENE

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

Priene, located south of Ephesus was located at the foot of Mount Mycale, facing south at Miletus about twenty miles from the gulf. The city had belonged to the alliance of the twelve Ionian cities in the archaic period. The city was famous for its temple dedicated to Athena Polias of Priene which was dedicated by Alexander the Great himself in 334 BC. Priene was an important city in Hellenistic and Roman times..
