Historical background

ITALY - DUCHY OF MILAN - LOUIS XII

(1499-1512)

From the start of his reign, Louis XII allied with Venice to overthrow Ludovic le More, who was beaten in Novara on April 10, 1500. Louis XII conquered Milan and became Duke of Milan. Ludovic was taken and died captive in France in 1508. On September 11, 1500, the Treaty of Granada provided for the division of the Kingdom of Naples between Louis XII and Ferdinand of Aragon. Naples was conquered in 1501, but the allies fell out in 1503 and the kingdom of Naples was definitively lost in 1504. Julius II formed the league of Cambrai in 1508 against Venice and the victory of Agnadel in 1509 forced the Venetians to restore to the pope the towns of Romagna. In 1511, the Pope formed the Holy League against France. The allies invade the Milanese. On April 11, 1512, the French won the victory of Ravenna, but lost their generalissimo, Gaston de Foix and the Milanese. Louis XII tries to reconquer the Milanese in 1513, but he is beaten in Novare on June 6th. The French must evacuate Italy.
