ITALY - EMILIA - PARMA - ALEXANDER FARNESE

(1586-1592)

He was born in 1545 in Rome from the union of Octave Farnese and Margaret of Austria (daughter of Emperor Charles V). He was brought up at the court of his uncle, King Philip II of Spain. In 1565 he married Marie de Portogallo. In 1578 he became governor of the Netherlands. Ardent defender of the Catholics, he opposed the troops of Henri IV in 1590 and 1591. He died in Arras in 1592.
