Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - CLEMENT IX (Giulio Rospigliosi)

(20/06/1667 - 09/12/1669)

Born in Pistoia in 1600, Giulio Rospigliosi was a literate man who loved the arts. He entered the service of the Barberini family, from which Pope Urban VIII came. In 1667, he succeeded Alexander VII. During his short reign, he embellished Rome with the commission from Bernini of the angels of the Ponte Sant'Angelo and the colonnade of the Vatican. His diplomatic activity is important in particular for his mediation for the Triate of Aix-la-Chapelle which puts an end to the Spanish War of Devolution..
