Coming from an old Roman family, Emilio Altieri serves various popes. On the death of Clement IX, the cardinals gathered in conclave are divided because of the rivalry between French and Spanish. Eventually, they agree on the election of an elderly pope. At the age of 78, Emilio Altieri becomes pope under the name of Clement X.
