(896-897)
Born in Rome on an unknown date, he succeeded Boniface VI and reigned from 886 to 897. His reign was marked by the quarrel between the Carolingians and the Spoletians for the nomination of the Western Emperor. In 897, he exhumed the corpse of Pope Formosus and judged him. Stephen V died strangled following a popular riot.
