Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - LEO X (Giovanni de Medici)

(09/03/1513-01/12/1521)

Second son of Lorenzo the Magnificent and Clarisse Orsini, he was destined very young for the ecclesiastical function. In 1489, he was made cardinal at the age of 13 but could not wear the insignia of his dignity until 1492. At 37, he succeeded Pope Julius II under the name of Leo X. He was a great protector of the arts by making Raphaël work among others. In 1515, he approached France by signing the Concordat of Bologna with François Ier. He tries in vain to reconcile with Martin Luther..
