Historical background

ITALIE - PAPAL STATES - PAUL V (Camillo Borghese)

(16/03/1605-28/01/1621)

Camille Borghese was born in Rome in 1552. In 1595 he was Pope Clement VIII's legate in Spain. After the death of this pope on March 3, 1605, Leo XI was elected pope on the following April 1; his pontificate lasted only twenty-six days due to his premature death. On March 16, 1605, after a short period of vacancy, Camille Borghese was elected pope under the name of Paul V. In 1616 he condemned Galileo for having taught the theories of Copernicus; Bernini completed the construction of Saint Peter's in Rome under his pontificate. He died on January 28, 1621.
