Historical background

ITALY - LIVORNO - COSIMO III DE' MEDICI

(1670-1723)

Born in 1642, he succeeded his father Ferdinand II de Medici in 1670. He was a great naturalist collector. His long reign is marked by the decline of Tuscany and the Medici line with the absence of posterity. His eldest son without posterity died in 1713. His youngest son, Jean-Gaston succeeded him in 1723 but he too had no descendants. Jean-Gaston will be the last of the Medici to reign, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany returning to François II of Lorraine in 1737.
