Historical background

ITALY – PRINCIPALITY OF SEBORGA - GIORGIO Ier

(1963-2009)

In the 1950s, residents of the municipality of Seborga demanded the reactivation of independence from the Italian Republic, by virtue of its former status as a principality which the locality would have enjoyed in the past, and they considered illegal the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia, then to Italy. The proclamation of Seborga as a principality dates back to 1963 when the village florist, Giorgio Carbone, was elected "Prince Giorgio I of Seborga". A plebiscite with the population of the village then approves its proclamation by 304 votes against 46. This secession is based on the bequest of the village to the abbey of Lérins in 954 by a count of Ventimiglia as well as on the protection of the house of Savoy , disappeared in 1946 and experienced as an “annexation” to Italy..
