Historical background

ITALY - REPUBLIC OF VENICE - PROVISIONAL GOUVERMENT

(1797-1798)

On May 12, 1797, faced with the advance of the French armies commanded by General Napoleon Bonaparte in the Venetian provinces of the mainland, Ludovico Manin one hundred and twentieth of the Republic of Venice abdicated, putting an end to 1070 years of independence. French troops occupy Venice and a provisional government is established. The Treaty of Campo-Formio of October 17, 1797 put an end to the Franco-Austrian war. The Republic of Venice is ceded to Austria. Austrian troops entered Venice on June 27, 1798.
