Historical background

ITALY - ITALIAN REPUBLIC

(since 1946)

On May 9, 1946, Victor Emmanuel III abdicated in favor of his son Humbert II in an attempt to save the House of Savoy. Unfortunately for him, by vote of June 2, 1946, the Italian people narrowly condemn the monarchy. Humbert II bows and leaves for exile. Italy therefore became a republic: the Constituent Assembly adopted a new Constitution which was approved on December 22, 1947, by 453 votes against 62, and entered into force on January 1, 1948. This Constitution instituted a social democracy, a parliamentary system based over two Chambers: the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
