En 1848, Rome sombre aussi dans la vague révolutionnaire qui traverse l’Europe. Des troubles éclatent et le Pape quitte Rome de 9 Décembre 1848. Le 9 Février, la République Romaine est proclamée. En avril, la France envoie un corps expéditionnaire sous le commandement du général Oudinot sauver la papauté. Le 4 juillet, la République Romaine capitule..
