Historical background

ITALY - NAPLES - CHARLES II OF ANJOU

(1254-1309)

Traditionally listed as Provence in reference books, Charles II's salutes were made in Naples. The salutes of Charles II are distinguished from those of Charles I by the presence on the right of SCD for Secundus. Charles II is titular King of Jerusalem (IERL') and the reverse legend translates to: "Hail Mary, full of grace, may the Lord be with you". Charles II (1254-1309) was the son of Charles I (1226-1285), therefore the nephew of Saint-Louis and the cousin of Philippe III.
