Historical background

ITALY - KINGDOM OF SICILY - CONSTANCE AND HENRY VI

(25/12/1194-1197)

After the premature death and without legitimate descendants of Guillaume II the Good then king of Sicily, the Sicilian-Norman kingdom must face serious problems of succession. Henri de Hohenstaufen, defeats Tancred, then pretender to the crown and is crowned on December 25, 1194. Henry VI puts out the eyes of his son as well as the nobles and bishops who attended the coronation of Tancred four years earlier in Palermo. From the coronation of Henry VI, Constance becomes queen. On the death of Henry VI in 1197, Constance dismissed a certain number of Germanic lords who had settled in the kingdom. She died on November 27, 1198, after having entrusted by will the regency of the Kingdom of Sicily to Pope Innocent III..
