Historical background

ITALY - SAVOY - DUCHY OF SAVOY - CHARLES-EMMANUEL IV

(1796-1802)

Charles-Emmanuel IV was born on May 25, 1751 in Turin from the union of Victor-Amédée III and Marie-Fernande of Spain. On September 6, 1775, he married in Chambéry, Marie-Adélaïde-Clotilde de Bourbon, daughter of the Grand Dauphin Louis and Josephe de Saxe, sister of the kings of France Louis XVI, Louis XVIII and Charles X. In 1797-1798, the French impose "anti-feudal" reforms on him so that he leaves his lands in December 1798 before taking refuge in Sardinia. In 1799 the French were driven out of Piedmont by the Austrians who eventually became part of France. In 1802 he abdicated in favor of his brother and retired to the Jesuits in Rome. He died in Rome in 1819 and was buried in the Church of the Gesu.
