Historical background

ITALY - SECOND SIEGE OF MANTUA

(1799)

After the War of the Succession of Mantua, the possession of the city was assured to Nevers. In 1708, when the Gonzaga-Nevers family died out, the Duchy of Mantua passed to the House of Austria and was then reunited with the Duchy of Milan in 1785. Taken by Bonaparte in 1797, the city was incorporated into the Republic cisalpine. In 1799, the French suffered a siege of seventy-two days during which coins were minted or cast, then they ended up capitulating to the Austrian troops. In 1801, Mantua will again be incorporated into the Cisalpine Republic until 1814.
