Historical background

ITALY - TUSCANY - VICTOR-EMMANUEL II

(04/29/1859-03/17/1861)

Victor-Emmanuel II (03/14/1820-01/9/1878), son of Charles-Albert and Teresa of Tuscany, succeeded his father who abdicated in 1849. In twelve years, with the help of Cavour and the alliance of France, he will reconstitute the kingdom of Italy for his benefit in 1861 but he does not take Rome until 1870. In 1859, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany is overthrown and takes as monarch Victor-Emmanuel II.
