Historical background

ITALY - VENICE - ALVISE IV MOCENIGO (118th doge)

(1763-1778)

He belongs to the very powerful Mocenigo family which gave four doges to the Republic: Alvise I (1570-1577), Alvise II (1700-1709), Alvise III (1722-1732), and Alvise IV (1763-1778). Alvise IV seeks in vain to stop the economic decline of Venice by creating new commercial reasons. By limiting privileges of the clergy, he comes into conflict with Pope Clement XIII.
