Historical background

ITALY - VENICE - PIETRO GRADENIGO (49th doge)

(1289-1311)

Pierre Gradenigo was elected doge by the patricians against Jacques Tiepolo, partisan of the democratic clan. He is at the origin of the aristocratic government of Venice with the creation of the Forty. From this date, the Doge was no longer elected but chosen by the Council. In 1296, he favored the creation of the Golden Book where the members of the Great Council were registered. At the end of his doganat, he created the Council of Ten, an organ of government. After facing several popular revolts, he died in 1311.
