Exemplaire sur un flan très large et épais, bien centré des deux côtés à l’usure régulière. Beau portrait du Christ. Épigraphie élégante au revers. Patine noire

Poids lourd. Follis anonyme (classe A). Trace de surfrappe légère. Les bras de la croix sont ornés de croisettes cantonnées de deux globules.

John I succeeded Nicephorus II Phocas who had been assassinated at the instigation of John and Theophano, the second wife of Nicephorus. John, a great general, triumphed over the Bulgarians in 971. He began a brilliant campaign in Palestine, but died of typhoid.
