Exemplaire sur un flan ovale et bombé. Frappe un peu molle au droit. Très joli revers de haut relief, mais de frappe un peu brouillée. Patine noire

Obverse description : La Vierge trônant de face nimbée, vêtue du pallium et du maphorium, tenant u buste de l’enfant Jésus.

Obverse translation : (La mère de Dieu).

Reverse description : Buste de Jean II barbu, couronné avec pendilia, vêtu du loros de face, tenant la croix patriarcale de la main droite et le globe crucigère bouleté de la main gauche.

Reverse translation : (Jean despote).
Commentary
Poids très léger. Vêtement richement décoré. Pendilia aux extrémités bouletées. Cinq globules au plastron et cinq globules au divitision.

Jean II, eldest son of Alexis Comnenus succeeded him on the throne of Byzantium on August 15, 1118 despite the opposition of his sister Anne. His reign marks a return of the empire to the international scene. Antioch was taken over while John II's Balkan policy allowed him to win diplomatically over the Serbs. He allied himself with the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in order to counterbalance the growing power of the Normans in southern Italy and Sicily. Domestically, he tried to reduce the commercial advantages of the Venetians granted by his father, Alexios. After twenty five years of reign, he died in a hunting accident.
