Exemplaire sur flan irrégulier, bien centré des deux côtés. Très beau portrait particulier de Julien II. Joli revers de style fin. Belle patine de collection ancienne

Obverse description : Buste drapé et cuirassé, tête nue de Julien II à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A°).
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Iulianus Nobilissimus Cæsar” (Notre seigneur Julien très noble césar).

Reverse


Reverse legend : GLORIA - REI - PVBLICAE/ VOT/ V/ MVLT/ X/ *// .KONS(TAN).
Reverse description : Rome et Constantinople assises de face sur une banquette, tenant ensemble un bouclier ; Rome est assise de face et tient un trophée de la main gauche qui repose sur son épaule ; Constantinople est assise à droite, tournée à gauche, le pied droit posé sur une proue de navire.
Reverse translation : “Gloria Reipublicæ/ Votis quinquennalibus multis decennalibus” (La gloire du bien public/ Vœux pour le cinquième anniversaire de règne et plus pour le dixième anniversaire à venir).

Commentary


Chevelure courte. Portrait très particulier de Julien II césar. Philippe Ferrando signale au total cinq exemplaires recensés, dont un au musée d’Arles et quatre en mains privées.

JULIAN II THE PHILOSOPHER

Caésar

Julian II was born in 330 in Constantinople. Spared during the massacre of his entire family in 337, he was sent into exile with his half-brother Constantius Galle. When the latter becomes Caesar, he obtains semi-freedom and completes his education, particularly in Athens. Converted to Christianity by force, he remained deeply pagan and was initiated into the worship of Eleusis and that of Mithras. After the death of Constantius Galle, he became Caesar on November 6, 355. Constantius sent him to Gaul to restore order, but without effective powers. He freed himself from this guardianship and won a great victory near Strasbourg in 357. He established his headquarters in Lutèce. It was there, in February 360, that he was proclaimed august by his troops, the first emperor on a shield..
