Historical background

LANDGRAVIATE OF UPPER ALSACE - LEOPOLD V ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA

(1620-1632)

Leopold of Austria (1586-1632) was the second brother of Ferdinand II of Austria and the son of Charles of Styria and Marie of Bavaria. He entered holy orders and became Bishop of Metz, Bishop of Strasbourg and Passau, Abbot of Murbach and Lure from 1614 to 1626. In 1620 as Duke of Austria and Count of Tyrol, he began to monetize in Alsace. He left the orders in 1626 and married Claude de Médicis (1604-1648) with whom he had three children. He died in 1632. On the reverse the shield is quartered: 1 from Hungary, 2 from Bohemia, 3 from Austria and Burgundy, 4 from Tyrol and Habsburg, at the tip of Ferrette and on the whole of Haute Alsace in heart.
