Historical background

LANGUEDOC - COUNTY OF SAINT-GILLES - ALPHONSE JOURDAIN

(1112-1148)

Alphonse Jourdain succeeded Bertrand as Count of Toulouse and was also Count of Saint-Gilles. Upon his death, Alfonso II was quickly replaced by Raymond V (1148-1194). Alphonse Jourdain, who was the son of Raymond IV of Saint-Gilles, wanted to reconquer the county of Tripoli from Guillaume II (1137-1152) his nephew, grandson of Bertrand, half-brother of Alphonse, but he died in 1148 in Caesarea of Lebanon during the second Crusade (1147-1149).
