Historical background

LAOS - LAN XANG

(1353-1707)

Lang Xang, also called the Kingdom of a Million Elephants, is a state associated with the Khmer Empire which corresponds approximately to present-day Laos and to the northeast of present-day Thailand. It was founded in the 14th century by Fa Ngum, an exiled child from the court of Angkor. This secures the borders and submits the principalities, and reforms Buddhism. Luang Prabang becomes the capital and spiritual kingdom. Prosperity lasts about 70 years, then plagued by political instability, the kingdom declines. From 1694, the kingdom was dismembered and the last king was proclaimed in 1707.
