Commentary
After le Franc, les Monnaies, les Archives (2019), le Franc d'Augustin Dupré (2021), discover le Franc, les Essais, les Archives, a six-volume encyclopaedia (2023-2027) that enriches and completes our knowledge of the history of the Franc between 1803 and 1870. After the first two volumes devoted to Napoleon I (1803-1815) and Louis XVIII (1814-1824), the third volume devoted to Charles X (1824-1830) was published to mark the bicentenary of the king's accession to the throne on 16 September 1824. He would have to wait until 29 May 1825 to be crowned king in Reims.
Three volumes in one year is not the result of an Olympic sprint, but of a marathon undertaken over nearly three decades on the history of the Franc. In 544 pages, the exploitation of the ‘paper’ and ‘metal’ archives plunges the reader into the monetary history of the reign of Charles X. Objectivity of information, a precise and meticulous catalogue, market-reflective quotations and high-definition iconography, accompanied by a gallery of coins and tools, are the major assets of this work, which is a must-have.
