Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Obverse description : Tête laurée à droite, la chevelure formée de croissants, une sorte de lis dans la chevelure.

Reverse


Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Cheval à gauche, la tête retournée formée d'une esse en guise de mâchoire inférieure et d'un point pour l'œil. Double volute centrée entre les pattes, roue à rayons entre la mâchoire et le dos.

Commentary


La couche d'or est bien nette autour des reliefs au revers. La palme au-dessus du cheval et la rosace entre ses jambes sont bien visibles.

The Leuques are mentioned only once in the Gallic Wars. Their neighbors were the Médiomatriques, the Lingons and the Séquanes. The Leuques as well as the Séquanes and the Lingones provided Caesar with wheat when the Roman army stopped at Vesontio (Besançon) to refuel before facing the Germans of Ariovistus (58 BC).
