Exemplaire sur un flan large bien centré. Très beau buste de Licinius Ier. Frappe molle et faible au revers. Très jolie patine verte et sable

Obverse description : Buste lauré consulaire de Licinius Ier à gauche, vu de trois quarts à gauche, tenant un sceptre et un globe de la main gauche et la mappa de la main droite (H*23).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Licinius Augustus”, (L’empereur Licinius auguste).

Reverse legend : IOVI CONS-ERVATORI AVGG/ -|BI// SMANT.
Reverse description : Jupiter nicéphore nu, debout à gauche, le manteau sur l'épaule, tenant un globe nicéphore de la main droite et un sceptre long de la gauche ; dans le champ à gauche, un captif agenouillé à gauche.
Reverse translation : “Iovi Conservatori Augustorum”, (À Jupiter protecteur de nos augustes).

Commentary


Poids léger. Très belle expression de visage de Licinius Ier. Semble complètement inédit et non recensé pour la douzième officine.

LICINIUS I

(11/11/308-09/324)

Licinius I was proclaimed august directly following the conference of Carnuntum, on November 11, 308. In 313, after the rescript of Milan, he married Constantine's half-sister, Constantia. In 316 a first war took place between Licinius and Constantine. It ends with the death of Valens and the signing of a peace between the two augusts. On April 1, 317, three Caesars were created: Crispus, Constantine II and Licinius II. A second war broke out between Constantine and Licinius in 321. It ended with the decisive defeat of Chrysopolis in 324 and the deposition of Licinius, exiled to Thessalonica before being executed the following year..
