Historical background

LIEUSAINT (LOCUS SANCTUS) - Seine-et-Marne

(7th century)

The origin of Lieusaint dates back to Druidic ceremonies and water cults. The Romans baptized the place Locus Sanctus, that is to say "holy place". In the Middle Ages, Lieusaint became a land of royal hunts. The attribution of Merovingian coins to this city, proposed by Ponton d'Amécourt, is based on the epigraphy LOCOSANCTO. Reported as early as the 17th century, the triens are well known and Belfort lists eighteen of them. All these coins are signed by the monetary DACOALDVS, except the last three signed respectively ASCARICVS, ERPO and SVEIOASION (?).
