Historical background

LIGURIA - REPUBLIC OF GENOA - ANONYMOUS

(1139-1339)

The coinage of Genoa is anonymous between 1140 and 1339. From this date we have coins with the names of the doges, in the first place, Simon Boccanegra (1339-1345). From the 12th century the Italian cities, Pisa, Amalfi and Genoa control the western Mediterranean trade accompanying the Reconquista in Spain. In the following century, with the Crusades, the decline of Byzantium and the birth of Christian states in the East and in Greece, Genoa and Venice opposed each other in a struggle that was both political and economic for the domination of economic circuits..
